Can new bulbs be started off in pots and then planted out when the shoots show?

Just bought some bulbs that were on offer in town. It says planting time is Jan-May so can i make up for lost time and start them off in pots in the greenhouse and plant them out in a few weeks time or does it not work like that?

The bulbs are Sparaxis and Ixia's if that makes any difference

But it's only just May - why not plant them straight into the ground?
