  • Seed Identification (please!)

    This is embarrassing!

I got a few free packets of seeds with a heated propagator which I bought a few months ago.

One of the packets claimed to be French Marigolds... I've never grown any Marigolds before so I happily sowed some of the seeds that were in the packet. They germinated and I've potted them on into small pots and stuck them in the greenhouse... lovely job, i thought!

A friend of mine called in over the weekend and helpfully told me that what I have are definitely not French Marigolds!

I've dug out the packet which still had some seeds in and was wondering if anyone could help with identifying them? I do remember thinking they looked like small sunflower seeds when I sowed them!

I think your friend is right, they certainly are not French marigolds, the leaves are all wrong. They look suspiciously like sunflower seeds to me.

Definitely sunflowers. Lucky you, I prefer them to French Marigolds.

If you don't win the tallest sunflower comp, you'll be in a chance with who has the most plants

              Hehehe! Love it!

Thanks everyone, I suspected as much but thought I'd check with the experts! ; )

No idea at all where this lot will be going, especially as I already have some lovely red sunflowers on the go!

I think a few will be offered around on the plots and the whatever is left can go on freecycle to find a new home... there's no way they'll fit in between the toms which is where I was planning on putting the marigolds! xD

1st May was sunflower guerrilla gardening day, so why not do a bit of guerrilla gardening? Sneak out early one morning and plant them on traffic islands and roadside verges that you know won't be mown.
