  • Sweet pea question

    Ive started some sweet peas off in the house for my trellis on the pack it says they are half hardy so Im wondering would they be ok to put outside now in the ground and ill just fix em to some bamboo as they grow,

    When did you start your sweet peas, and what are they in at the moment?

      I started them off about 8 weeks ago they are in compost in a plastic container they are about 6inches high x

        For next year sow your sweet peas 3 seeds to a 3 inch pot. Then you won't have to worry about untangling the roots which is what you will have to do now.

        Carefully separate your plants and plant them out where you want them to grow and flower. They climb netting or trellis better than canes as they cling to their support with little curly tendrils.

          Yeah, canes are no good for peas. They don't climb like beans do: instead they have little thin "arms" or tendrils, which delicately cling to fine netting, or chicken wire

            You can get them outside now, they'll be fine. Although as others have said, they won't climb up a bare cane.

            As half hardy plants go, sweet peas are pretty tough. Last year I had some self-seeded ones that germinated in autumn and survived in the back garden until I pulled them up and composted them in March.
