  • Growing tulips from seed

I have just found a tulip with a seed head on it that has ripened, it is one I missed when deadheading. When I bought it inside it burst open and has many brown seeds inside. Has anyone had any success with growing tulips from seed. Google states that it is a long and unreliable process.

I sowed some collected seed last year and although I had a little collection of tiny bulbs this spring which I potted on this none seem to have made it - all the stems withered. But I've left them all in the pot and will see if they come back in the spring as I guess they may just have been dying back naturally.
I used ordinairy garden compost and just left them in a shady slug proof place.
