  • Wee for Top Sunflower!

So my mate Wellie tells me that I have to wee into a bottle, dilute and use it to water the sunflower plant that we have at the Hill in the hope that it will grow to be The Tallest Sunflower and win A Prize.

All I know is that when my mum's dog wees on the lawn, it makes big brown dead patches.

So my question, venerable grapes, is by how much do I water my wee...or is Wellie 'pulling my chain'.......?

You could be on a rich seam here Hazel BUT.....
I don't think Wellie is pulling your leg entirely
But I don't think female pee water works in that way
I think your mothers dog is a bitch and the pee water just "burns" the lawn
Male piss does seem to act as a good fertilizer and compost activator - it's the ammonia that does it
    but it stinks
and do you want to go down that route ?
I think any conventional form of plant food will get you good results.
Parts of France are covered in fields of sunflower - gorgeous - and there's nobody out there peeing on them.
    Good luck with the sunflower.
You could run a wee trial of your own.
    Plant three.
    Wee on one
    Conventional feed for one
Nothing but water for the other.
And report back, then we'll all know.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Wee in a 2 gallon watering can and fill up with water!

Similar to using sulphate of ammonia which is a high nitrogen feed and promotes leaf growth!

Although I am cautious about being 'official wee trial monitor', I do think that Alice has a point - you don't know till you try....

If wee is high in nitrogen which is good for leafy plants, Snadge, can I also use it for my brassicas, leeks and spinach?

Another plus point here is that the 'feed' is organic!

I'm sure we're all quite happy to have you as the wee trial monitor. Do let us know how it goes.

As long as I aint got to eat em!

Btw......Sulphate of ammonia can also be used as a weed killer (scorches plants!)so make sure you get the dosage right!

Snadger, surely even if you grow organically you surely still give your plants a wash before you eat them. Don't forget it's not just the gardeners that wee on them, you've also got visiting cats, dogs, foxes, mice, slugs and snails.

Perhaps it is just me not being particularly not fussy, but I don't agree with you on this one, Snager! Out of all the things that can - and do - go on the soil/on your growing veg (I'm thinking on horse sh*t in particular here!), I think that my wee is the least of my problems!

Anyway, as RL says, you wash your veg, so it doesn't seem to me to be an issue.

OK then Hazel....Let's say for arguments sake your house was not connected to the main sewerage system (as for quite a few outlying farms etc ) and your sewerage fed into a cesspit!

When the guy came to empty the cesspit would you want him to pile it in an area so you could use it on your veg????............ Same thing really!

If your answer to the question is YES you may as well have a bucket instead of a loo!

Sorry, but all I was discussing here was using a dilute solution (10:1) of my wee as a nitrogen feed on my veg which will be washed before eating anyway!

Confession time...I don't always wash the vedge I eat!

I just wipe radishes, then pop them in my mouth. If I pull an onion to have with my cheese sarmie I just peel it, slice it and put it in the sarnie. If I eat sweetcorn (which I adore , raw!), I just peel back the outer husk and eat it!

Good luck with your sunflowers Hazel

I dont pee on any veg, just on the compost heap as its a great accelerator.
