  • Bargain Bulbs

Just got back from the garden centre (Wyvale) with 50 large flowered crocus corms, 50 "jetfire" daff bulbs, 25 snakes head fritillaries, and 24 snowdrops, all for just £7 I've no idea where I'm going to squeeze them in, but how could I resist a bargain like that? I could have got so many more, but I know I have no room.
Wouldn't normally buy snowdrops in packets as they often don't grow, but I could see they were all beginning to shoot, so should grow away fine.

Start your snowdrops in clumps in pots then plant out the whole thing .....

      wow- what a fantastic bargain!!

We bought a huuuuge bag of daffs at a silly low price from Wyvale before Crimble. They are sat waiting in our barn to be planted out...next week I hope, BUT.....you can ALWAYS find room to shove in a few extra bulbs- even if it's indoors!!!
Brill gifts for peeps for birthday gifts/late Xmas gifts too once planted up!

Thing is...planting late outdoors may mean they don't flower in 2014 ..but they will certainly produce leaves...and then in 2015 the bulbs/corms will be ready to produce wonderful flowers!

A few years back I planted out daffs in Jan/Feb and it was a really cold Spring. I wasn't expecting any flowers that year...BUT...they flowered in June!
Really weird seeing daffs in June!
Interestingly the flowers only lasted a couple of days- couldn't cope with the 'hot' sunshine.
It certainly made me aware of the fantastic abilities of some flowers to cope with frost and yet frazzle out with heat!!

well, you could layer them: daffs go in deeper than snowdrops, so you can put the snowdrops on top of the daffs. They'll all come up normal, they won't be "competing for nutrients"

          That's a great idea TS.
Was going to plant them all this morning, but everywhere's white with frost, which I wasn't expecting. They'll have to wait for New Year's day now. I've put them in the closed in porch to keep them cool.

They were all £1 a pack. there were so many packs and bags on the display stand, I reckon if I give it a week they'll be down to 50p a pack then I won't be able to resist getting some more

I predict that a scooter with a Mod on it will visit Wyval@ in the morning

B&Q are now selling 3kg nets of daffs for £1.50. I appreciate it is now very late for this year but as it's been so mild it might be worth a punt? I bought a net and will be putting mine into planters as the grounds so wet.

Sure they will be ok, if we get some really cold n frosty weather, it'll slow their growth anyway, mine have come thru already, which I was bit worried about, but have been told, it's because of the mild winter, but they'll be ok.

I think what they have now done is to discount the original 75% off spring bulbs by another 50%...
