I'm building a pergola, and am planning on growing a Wisteria up one post and over the front of the pergola.

It's south facing, so gets plenty of sun, and I've noticed that there's either Japenese or Chinese vars.

Any idea which will fair better in South Wales?

I also have a grape that I'm planning on growing up and over the top of the pergola to create shade underneath - will this place nice with the wisteria along the front edge?

Should I be training it up and around the posts (quite large- 6") or tub some wires up/along the post for it to cling to?

    Thanks in advance!

Wisteria are real thugs once they get going, so may overpower the vine.
The main difference between Japanese and Chinese Wisteria is that Japanese Wisteria twines clockwise around the host plant and the Chinese Wisteria twines counter-clockwise around the host plant. Also Japanese Wisteria flowers are more fragrant and more prominent than the Chinese Wisteria flowers.
