buddleia

Hi everyone,


Im in need of some help, Im wanting a buddleia I tried starting one off last year done everything on the pack then nothing...... Not one seed came through!

Ive got another pack, It says sow them indoors in feb (when in feb should I sow?) how should I sow, has anyone got a buddleia did you start it from seed if so how did you do it?

Honestly Im finding it really hard to grow, you know I went past an abandoned car park a few months back and there was one there growing from a tiny crack in the ground!! If this set of seeds dont work out I think I might go and dig that one up, sure no one would mind!

I have never tried to grow them from seed but I often stick my prunings in the ground or a pot and I am almost overrun with them now. If you have a friend with one, ask if you can pinch a few cuttings and just shove them in a pot of compost, you will probably be successful.

where would they cut from, my next door neighbor has one in her garden but like me she wouldnt have a clue where to start x

We moved here a little over a year ago .

I had a go at growing a buddleia from a seed packet
Just grew it in compost in a small pot ..
No real trick to it , bar trial and error .

Throughout last summer it grew quite well from a seedling .
I have not put it in the garden over wintered in a larger pot in a cold frame
It will go in the main garden this summer ..

I'm no expert far from it . Read the books about the species of buddleia .some attract different different butterfly's better than others
We got a Royal Red variety which I think is really beneficial to butterflies

We had an established purple buddleia . I think its a davidiii species
I tried to take a cutting . Which has survived the winter but unsure if it will develop

as for germination of seeds .
It's very much learn by experience
Don't overwater the compost .
Its easy done ! Believe me .

I have some clear plastic boxes with bubble wrap in . With seeds in empty lurpak tubs !
Trying to propagate as much as I can

I'm having mixed results tbh
Some things have germinated very well others not at all !

I just cut them straight off, as one might prune a rose and stick them in the ground or a pot late summer (August/September ish?) once they have finished flowering. I don't cut them in any special way. I think you could take some heel cuttings but I haven't found it necessary.

Ive sown alot of these as i send them of as presents. I sow mine in a tray of already watered compost, the seed is fairly small so i find its best to sow when the soil is already moist. I sprinkle a little vermiculite or compost on top but not to much and i leave on my bedroom window as its nice and sunny. Keep on just moist the compost shouldn't look really wet. If you sow now they should be fine. Take 2-3wks for them to come up. Once they are up pot on and do so whenever they get a bit rooty in the pots. Prune them back next spring like you would a slightly older one.
Alternatively i have a orange ball buddleja and in the spring, round may time i take cuttings of the fresh growth and put in a pot of 1/2 compost 1/2 gravel. The cuttings take well and you get a replica of the plant. If you know someone with a buddleja that you like this may be an easier option.
