The date is 24th February and I discovered loads of greenfly [some winged] covering the new shoots on every one of my climbing roses. I can't believe it.

We have had clouds of flying wotsit thingies already this year. Smallish gangly flies with long legs, I don't know what they were, just held my breath and waved my arms as I walked through them to get in the garden gate. When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

I've had recent explosions of greenfly in the house & greenhouse on the overwintering plants: now it's warming up the eggs are hatching, and of course each new aphid is female, and is born already pregnant
There was a brilliant TV programme on them last week: Aphid Clip: David Attenborough's Natural Curiosities Series 2 - YouTubeAll gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.
