  • How to perk up lavender plants?

    Hi,
Have a couple of lavender plants down at the allotment. Kept them on from the last plot holder and because the bees love them. Have noticed they seemed to of gone a bit woody and a bit tired looking.
Is there anything I can do or give them to perk them up a bit or should I get some new ones?Have never taken lavender cuttings before is to get them to root etc?
    Thanks

Mrs.BB prunes hers after it has finished flowering, cutting back the new growth to about an inch of greenery on each stalk, she sometimes uses a few of the pruning's as cuttings.

Trim it hard preferably after flowering but don't cut back into old wood.

I'd take cuttings, they are relatively easy - and no need to ditch the parent plant until you have new replacement plants ready (they will be a year getting to a reasonable size for planting).

You need to cut Lavender back after flowering, and be pretty ruthless about it, as once they get to the woody, dishevelled, look you can't rejuvenate them, as they don't regrow from being cut back into old wood.

Cut them back by all means - but only half the plant. That way, if you make a mistake (I do!), then at least the plant will survive.

And a little fertiliser and compost helps.

I really butchered one right back last year and it is now the healthiest I've ever seen it - can't say I knew what I was doing but it worked for once

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
