  • Fresia from seed?

I've had a modicum of success with growing freesias from bulbs, but is it possible to do them from seed? I got a lot of big seed pods formed after the flowers this year. Seems a shame not to try them.

    Found this for you:
    1. To speed up germination, soak seed overnight in water to soften the coat.
    2. Sow 7/8 seeds to a 5” pot containing well-drained compost.
    3. Cover the seeds with 1/4” of compost, and germinate at around 20°C.
    4. Seeds should take 10-15 days to germinate.
    5. Prick out the seedlings into individual 3” pots when they are large enough to handle, and grow on in a well-lit position, but out of direct sunlight.

Does it say what time of year to sow?

March - June (although if you're going to grow and keep them indoors I suppose it could be later). Also it might take a couple of years before they bulk up and flower

I thought it would take some time for them to get to a flowering stage. Probably easier to get the old bulbs up and separate the newly formed bulblets.

I grew from seed many years ago - very proud I was too! They do take a long time - the seedlings look like grass if I remember correctly - but the flowers were worth the wait.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?
