  • Moving heathers - is this viable?

I have an established (10 years) heather bed which I now fancy changing. Will the heathers survive being dug up and planted elsewhere? Any tips on best way to go about it all please?

I suppose one way would be to take cuttings and then make sure that you get all the root ball when moving.

took a row of heathers from my mum's garden (which were beautiful), about 8 yrs old, i lost every one! although i have transplanted a few younger ones in my own garden and they have been ok! good luck!

Shirl, it's not entirely easy to move heathers but it can be done. I'd go for belt and braces on this one.
Take cuttings from your heathers. Take loads. Cut 2" tips, strip off lower "leaves" ,push into compost. Some of them will take.
To move your plants - dig them out, dig big deep holes, plant the heathers nearly up to their tips - yes thats what I mean, leave a few inches sticking above the ground. Most of them will take. And they do like it peaty - so put plenty in the hole.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
