Fuchsia Cutting

Hello

I have a little Fuchsia cutting in a mix of potting compost and vermiculite on the windowsill with a plastic bag over the top (I let it breathe for a few hours a day).

What size will it have to be to pot it on... I have never done this sort of thing before

Wait 'til you see roots coming out of the bottom of the pot. A gentle tug on the cutting will give you an idea of whether its rooted - or a new green leaf or shoot.
I don't bother with plastic bags

I tried fuschia cuttings a year ago with success

Keep the leaves moist , use a cheap handheld sprayer to cover then in mist now and then

I overwinter them in a med sized pot .
Planted out earlier in the year , now in flower !

I root mine in water and pot on when they have a decent amount of roots.

The important thing is to leave some leaves on but not too many, otherwise the cutting transpires water through its leaves faster than the stem can take it up from the compost.

Having a cloche of some kind keeps moisture in, as does leaving it in shade not in full sun.

The easiest way is to root fuchsia in water, like you would mint

I woul go with a 9cm pot to start then pot up when roots emerge from the bottom

Can I but in on this thread and ask when should I take fuchsia cuttings . I have several rally beautiful ones for the hanging basket that I want to propagate

No doubt I'm completely wrong

I took my fuchsia cuttings about this time last year .
Left them over winter in my coldframe
Seemed to do well , then planted out early this year .
Am real pleased way they have flowered this summer



Don't take cuttings of anything likely to flower

Oh dear, it died I can't have taken the first cutting properly and it went black.... I have taken another cutting and made it bigger this time and left more leaves on it. Let's see what happens this time!

i always find rooting in water is the most successful method. Remove all but the top few leaves. ,and leave in a tumbler so you can see when the roots show.As soon a small roots show pot up .

Sometimes its just a matter of luck. The best way is to take several cuttings - some should take. I normally have about 80% success rate with any cuttings I take.
