What's up with my Amaryllis

I bought an Amaryllis plant last year from IKEA. The plant grow two beautiful flowers and finishing flowering just after Christmas. I stopped watering the plant and storage it in a dry room.

I noticed a few months back the plant had started to grow again. I bought it back into the living room and started to water it again. It's since grow four very tall leaves but no flower. I've not idea what to so with it. I know normally Amaryllis plant are a winter plant so I was surprised it had started to grow.

Any ideas what I should do with it?

Mine usually get left outside during the summer if they start to sprout. It's getting colder now, I'd put it outside during the day and bring it undercover overnight. It should flower before Christmas as it's started shooting already, though you could slow it down by keeping it in cooler conditions.....I often keep mine in the porch for several weeks. I think I would pot on, yours look a little cramped.

I'll put it into a bigger pot over the weekend. Do i need to use any special soil?

The preferred soil mix for amaryllis is high in organic matter such as two parts of loam soil to one part of perlite to one part of well rotted manure. If manure is not available, another source of organic matter, such as peat, leaf mould, composted bark or wood or compost, may be used.

They don't always flower every year - you need to feed it well and when the leaves die back, cut them off. The ones you buy are forced and the flower spike appears first.

Three years ago I was given a potted amaryllis plant in flower. When the four flowers died down I replanted it in the garden. Every year since then I have had four large red flowers. This year I also had four large flowers in the spring and then the plant died down as usual. It has always been regularly watered with a drip system. At the beginning of this month I was surprised to see leaves forming as large as those in the picture. Maybe I'll get more flowers.
