  • Hmm no sign of my sweetpeas or bagonias yet, sown around the 20th Jan. Geraniums, coleus, lobelia and dusty miller are all up.

    • So far I've sown Red Hot Pokers (late Dec), perennial Snapdragons (early Jan), Passion Flowers late Jan), Evening Primrose (late Jan), Cupid's Dart (late Jan), French Marigolds (early Feb), assorted Pansies (early Feb), Petunia Limochello (mid Feb) and some more Passion Flower (mid Feb). All on heated propagators under a grow light.

Of those, the Red Hot Pokers and Cupid's Darts are already out in my cold frame with a little heater to keep the temperature above freezing. Only 2 of the first Passion Flower sowing germinated (hence the second sowing) but they are looking good. Most of the Evening Primrose came up and have been potted on, along with some of the Snapdragons that came up. One of the varieties of Pansy hasn't put in an appearance but the other two have, whilst I don't expect to see the 2nd Passion Flower sowing or Petunias yet.
The Marigolds came up, and are still going, like rockets. Seeing them come up was weird - at first I thought the seeds had "floated" up through the compost because all they'd appeared to do was rise to the surface but then they stood up and dropped off the leaves.

I'm certainly doing better than last year (my first year trying to grow anything) when I had poor germination and fairly weak, leggy seedlings. Most of them did do OK in the end, especially the Thyme which has taken over the bed as I'd wanted very well, but I'm sure they'd have done better with better conditions, hence the heated propagators and the grow light this year.

                  • Today I decided it was spring so I started a few more seeds in pots:
                    - Cleome "Helen Campbell"
                    - Cornflower "Blue Ball"
                    - Gypsophila
                    - Cosmos "Purity"
                    - Mesembryanthemum (Livingstone Daisy)
                    - Tagetes "Naughty Marietta"
                    - Climbing nasturtiums
                    - Tithonia
                    - Gazania (saved seed)

Not sure where I'm going to find space to grow them all, though!

Yes I know. Had an Idiot moment. Please ignore me I'll be better after a lay down. 69 years last December and the marbles are going already. If I get to 79 someone will have to show me where my garden is let alone being able plant anything in it!!!

                          Best regards,
