Rose plant thing

Evening all...

It's not very often I venture in to the flower mill as I don't grow much in the way of flowers although I know I should grow more .

Anyways, I was given a rose plant thing by a friend for my birthday, I've had it about 4 weeks and it's alive and healthy looking. Question is should it remain in the house or should I be chucking it in the garden at some point? I've never had one of these before, will it die at the end of summer or is it something that lives for years?

What kind of a rose plant thing Moopmoop? Can you describe it to us? Or even better show us a photo? Are you talking about an actual rose plant in a pot, maybe a miniature one, or just a plant that looks something like a rose? Does it have any kind of a label?

Hmm my phone doesn't take good photo's at night cos it has no flash so for tonight can we assume it's like this photo I stole from goggle. It does look similar to this but my flowers are white.

Hmm it did have a label but I don't remember it saying a lot other than that I should love it and water it so I threw label away. It has thorns and the flowers look like roses if that helps cos the pic is rubbish.

Some people seem to get away with planting them out once it gets a tad warmer - but I've never had any luck!

Just seems a shame to keep it as a houseplant cos I never have any luck with them. I've eventually killed every houseplant I've ever had so at the minute I have some kind of succulent that I am trying my luck with.

Just discovered that my succulent is a jade plant.

It should be plantable outside eventually because roses are hardy shrubs. But it's probably had some special pampering to get it blooming so early in the year, so it might be a bit too delicate to plant out immediately. I'm only guessing really, but I'd say keep it inside a bit longer, and gradually get it accustomed to outdoor life by leaving it out for a few hours during nice days, and then increasing the outdoor time, and see how it likes that.

If you look at it closely, are there several little plants in the pot or is it one main stem. I have one I bought cheap recently that has about 6 "cuttings" around the edge of the pot, each one capable of being a little miniature rose. I won't plant it out in the main garden though, it would get lost but it may end up as an outdoor pot plant(s)

There are 5 plants in the pot which I've only just realised, I had thought it was one stem. I would only be potting up to go outside and not in the ground. Do you think I could pot a few outside and keep the rest indoors?

My wife got one of these for her birthday last September. Like yours, it is actually 5 rooted cuttings. Once it stopped flowering I put it in the cold greenhouse to rest over winter.

At the beginning of this month I put it into a deeper and more decorative pot; it's now stood outside in a sheltered spot and has come into leaf this week.

I'm hoping I can keep it alive so that it will flower in its normal season and live as an outdoor pot plant.

With yours, I'd enjoy it until the flowers fade then cut each stem back to the first full leaf, put it outside and keep it fed and watered for the summer. You may get more flowers this year, but in any event you should let it live mostly outdoors and bring it in just for a week when it's at its very best.

Thanks for the advice, I shall do that. I'm not usually one for growing roses but it is rather pretty and I'd like to try and keep it alive and not have to throw it away like you have to if you get a bunch of cut flowers.
