Climber query.

Hi all. I'm looking to purchase an evergreen climber and the one I think that suits best for the location of my wall is a Trachelospermum star jasmine. Does anyone have experience of it in their garden. I know it's a bit messy but I'm smitten with the description.also I'm tempted by Jasmine Clotted Cream. I aim to buy a large plant..no plugs for me
I will be removing a very established variegated ivy to accommodate it. The ivy is nice but negates any colour in front of it as its very overpowering.
Look forward to your replies. I'm so excited about this I really need to get out more

Don't know about the plant you suggest but if you add your location I am sure that someone will be along who does.

If you're putting it on a tall north facing wall in the north of Scotland it will will sulk and then die in winter.

On a west/south facing wall in the SE of England it will grow like a weed to huge proportions.

Hi, that sounds great! But have you thought about retaining the ivy and growing stuff through it? Would make a nice screen to some summer flowering clematis and annuals such as morning glory, glory vine, cup and saucer vine? Just a thought, good luck x

Valleyman you must be psychic! That's my location s/w facing wall SE England . I know it's an enthusiastic grower but I can keep it cut back a bit. I know that restricts its flowering but I want the evergreen aspect of it mainly.
Vickilou the ivy is a large leaf variety Hedra Canariensis yellow edge with green centre. It's lovely in winter but absolutely nothing shows up against it in summer and I have a border in front of it. So need to tone it down.

Fortunately they are pretty tough once established so at least if (or should I say when) it gets out of control you can just chop it right back and it will grow back healthier than ever.

They smell amazing and I love the colour. I've been a bit crazy and bought lots of little climbers. I'm now banned from buying anymore and have to wait for this lot to grow, I'm sure there is room for more, but my husband does not agree?!

ancee.. Your husband doesn't agree??? You need to sort the issue of gardener seniority out I think. Do you mean you bought lots of little Jasmine climbers or just all sorts?

Thanks for the link Veggiechicken. I'll look into that. I looked at garden centre and they are eye wateringly expensive for anything established. I'll have to shop around.

I went a bit mad in the pound shop! Bought clematises, (clemati? Clematis?) buddlejia mock orange, jasmine, roses and honeysuckle. They are all doing well, so he's probably right! I noticed two clematis I'd forgotten about growing through some others I'd planted last year! Well, if they all do well they'll hold the fences up for ever!

Pound shop climbers! What a bargain and highly recommended!

Ooh ancee I've bought the same rose from the pound shop! Just planted it yesterday. It's a bit tiddly but looks ok. I gave it a dose of Epsom salts today so fingers crossed. Can't go wrong at a pound a plant.
