I tend not to think about colours much when planting stuff. I only worry about height, spacing and shade / aspect. But every now and again, things work out really well. Look at these self-seeded sweet williams among the penstemon flowers:
Unfortunately, sometimes the coincidence isn't so happy. Just the other side of the path, more sweet williams don't do anything to enhance the candelabra primulas behind them:
