Agapanthus - more flowers wanted

Hi, I bought some bulbs in Madeira a few years ago. I've no idea what type of Agapanthus(es) they are but planted them altogether in a large container.

I don't know what sort it they are but this now large plant has large strap like evergreen leaves with large white and blue flower heads (Obviously different bulbs!). I've had several flowers for a couple of years, only one last year and now three. How can I encourage more of these wonderful long lasting flowers?

II have lots of these in the garden and around 120 seedlings that are coming along slowly.

They like to be pot bound. If you plant them in a big container you will get haphazzard flowering until they start to fill the pot and then they will literally go off like a firework, with flowers everywhere. You can either wait or repot in a smaller one to bring the process forward somewhat.

Thanks for that, Piglet. They seem very crowded now as they have multiplied and I assumed they would be pot bound. I was aware this is what they liked. Perhaps not pot bound enough eh? I'll see what happens next year and go from there

Mine went like tha last year - no flowers. i fed them with general feed - cant remember the name, and they put on loads of leaves - ummmmmmm i thought but this year I just let them get on with it, just watered as needed and I have 7 flowers on the white one and 12 on the blue one - separate pots. White was in the shade so I have moved it now. One of my favorite flowers. I am so happy and I look at the buds each day can't wait to see them break .

I haven't really bothered feeding much as there were huge clumps in Madeira growing wild in what looked liked pretty poor soil. No-one goes out and feeds those do they?

I'm like you Denise - I keep peering down the middle of the clumps of leaves to see if there are any buds popping up and when the buds do come I can't wait for them to split open and the flower start poking out!!

Ahh but they have a free root run and don't have to put up with our climate

I know....just being stupid really. I think I'd thrive better somewhere like that as well.

I'll measure the pot, count up the actual plants (when the deluge has stopped) and see if anyone in the forum thinks they'd be better in a smaller pot next year.
