  • Pruning wisteria

Hi, we have a beautiful, huge and well established wisteria growing up the front of our house. We need to clear so the house can be re-painted at the end of this week and I'm looking for advice on how to do it. Potentially I could do a mini prune, release the vine from its supports on the front wall and let the plant 'flop' into the front garden then reattach it once the painting is done. OR, hard prune it back (I've read advice that wisterias can cope with taking back to 30cm from ground level) but I don't know if doing this in late July is a sound idea?
Any and all advice gratefully received!

Hello Caroline and welcome to the forum.
I've changed the title of the thread and moved it to the Flower Mill where it should attract more attention.
I now nothing about wisteria, sorry!

I've got a wisteria and I think they are pretty bomb proof! Personally I think either of those methods would work although as most hard pruning is generally done during the dormant season - late Oct - Feb To be on the safe side I would try the min prune and untie it! but I wouldn't worry too much if some of the branches were cut right out. It will be interesting to see other grapes views.

        Hello!

I had a stunning Wisteria in my old back garden - in flower, you could smell it as soon as you got out of the car at the front of the house. Fab!

This time of year, in my various Customers' gardens, I just take off the leggy bits that are waving round in the breeze, just in case they decide to flower again in August - mine used to, most years.

However, with the house being painted, I would just detach the thing from its supports, and gently lower it to allow access. I would also threaten the painter with death and no payment, if he trampled all over it. That should do it!

        Welcome to the Madhouse!
