Another ID help required please.

My granddaughter arrived this morning with a lovely bunch of flowers for SWMBOs birthday.

This was included and of course she asked "Granddad what is this called?" My knowledge of flowers and ornamentals is just about zero, but I told her I knew some people that could explain and so it is over to the grapevine.

What didn't go down to well was when I suggested we could lightly boil it to go with the chicken dinner.

Ornamental cabbage would be my best bet!

Ornamental cabbage, Pots. Edible but obviously NOT grown for flavour in this case

Thanks both ..........then cooking it was not such a bad idea after all, but with the granddaughter due back in and hour I don't think I dare.

Its certainly a thought BM from the looks of the stem which SWMBO had trimmed to length before I took the pic they grow to a good height.

In all honesty I thought it may have been crossed with a rose due to the shape of the heart leaves.

As MH states, they are not bred for texture, flavour or taste! I've tried one!

But could be worth a bash, but would have thought the caterpillars would just find them as repulsive as I did................

But very pretty they are indeed, come in a variety of colours too, and you can get ornamental kale, just as pretty too!

Someone gave these to my daughter just before Christmas. Warn SWMBO that when they start to deteriorate they pong something terrible! They are lovely though and you get them in different colours...how they do that I have no idea!

Jay! Pretty much with all cabbage, or the whole "Brassica" family, once past their best pretty much "Honk"
