Marigold confusion!

Please speak slowly ... and dumb it down for me, I get confused easily!
Marigolds as deterrents...
Right. I've been planting calendula and I think I've got it wrong!
If I'm trying to deter whiteflies from the greenhouse what should I use?
Is it the small, scraggly looking marigolds?
Calendula?
or the pompon looking African ones?
Or have I just confused myself more?
Photos will help and also specific names, then I can buy and plant the correct ones this year and hopefully not get white or green flies!

I use French marigolds & have some plants higher up too if you can for top growth protection,the smell is repellant to them,I read something about the roots exuding a substance & whiteflies not wanting to nest near them,it seems true but I don't know if that's the reason I've never asked one?

I've always believed it's Tagetes that deters the whitefly, especially French marigolds but probably African ones too. But not Calendula.

Although I suspect other people have different views; rigorous scientific testing is hard to come by.

Tagetes in the greenhouse helps to keep aphids out, but calendula in the kale bed to attract all the insects that will eat the bl00dy whitefly lol

French Marigold and Nasturtiums are recommended against whitefly! I use French Marigolds under my runners to stop snails getting at them! Gives them a chance to get going.

Right I'm on it! Just ordered a bag of mixed French marigolds. I already have nasturtiums and calendulas. Also some poached egg plants. I'm planting them all! There will not be a fly white or otherwise in my greenhouse! Although, by the time I've planted all these I might not have any room for tomatoes!

I normally plant French Marigolds amongst the tomatoes, but this last season on one of my long weekends in at work, my "Gardening Buddy" thought he'd try get a step ahead!

We are very pleased to have been able to obtain a supply of these seeds again for it is one of those useful plants we are frequently asked if we can supply. It is not as an ornamental that it is sought, but for its reputation as a destroyer of weeds by means of its strong herbicidal root secretions which repel nematodes and suppress weeds. Among the more popular weeds said to yield to these are Ground Elder, Couch Grass, Convolvulus and other nasties. In general appearance, well grown, it looks like a rather large African Marigold with particularly finely cut leaves (so at the very least you finish up with a rather fine foliage plant) but with small flowers more like an impoverished, pale yellow Groundsel. Plant out in spring 12ins apart. 8ft (2.4m)

Plant French Marigolds (Tagetes) between your tomato plants to keep whitefly away. It's not that the whitefly don't like these marigolds, but their pungent smell masks the nice smell of the tomatoes that attracts whitefly.

French Marigold to repel whitefly
Mexican Marigold (tagetes minuta) also repels whitefly, but it's 6 ft tall

I plant French or African Marigolds to deter the whiteflies. When I pkant out my tomato plants I put a Marigold beside.
Cant give ou a guarantee but I have had no trouble from the dreaded whitefly since I started doing this.
