  • The kid's wigwam..or is that teepee..?

    Hi all,
Not sure whether to post in flowers or vegetables but went for flowers!

I received a text earlier asking me what we can grow around canes to form a wigwam that the kids can use as a den up the allotment, it needs to be quite dense but also 'die off' quite well when winter comes so it can be demolished.

I've been told (i get told, quite a lot) that we're not having..
    Sweet peas
    Cucumbers, or any squash etc
    peas beans

Any thoughts on a kid friendly dense climber that might be suitable?

    Edible or non edible..

    Thanks

Morning Glory?...........Stunning colours & although part of the bindweed family, it's a non invasive annual.

Well, there's always nasturtiums, they'll grow fast and scramble up, though they'd be happier with more of a trellis than just straight canes I think.

What about rhodochiton, the purple bell vine? I've never grown it, but it's reckoned to be fast growing and easy care. Don't know how it fares on the child-friendly front though.

Rhodochiton atrosanguineum - Half-hardy Annual Seeds - Thompson & Morgan
      Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
      Endless wonder.

Thanks BM, I really like some of the blues, 'her indoors' has been told (earlier today) that it is invasive and takes over?

Out of curiosity what have they got against those options?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I reckon the kids would love to grow black cherry tomatoes up their wigwam, they could go in their den and have lunch.

Whilst we do have sweet peas, my other half is concerned about having them in the kids area, although I like to think they wouldnt eat them!
The others, I just think shes in despair at the large amounts of those we already grow, and the impending, countless days of runner beans..

                Something different is called for!

What about Tromboncino squash? Think of the laughs they'd have with those!

Suddenly thought today, what about hops? They grow fast and tall, you can use the flowers in sleep pillows, and oh yes, use them to make your own home brewed beer....

Are you going to put something like debri netting around the outside,so it gives a feel of being in a wig wam,and plant outside that, your plants will still thrive, whilst the kiddies have that bit more room, instead of using canes, how about a structure out of stronger stuff, then cover and plant, that way they will have more room inside, say like lathes, and tie it all together,a bit like the nomads tents idea,
