  • Growing flowers for spring

    Hi All

New at growing flowers, I have been told to sow flowers for next year now. Do I sow in the green house, surely this will bring them on too soon, or do I sow and leave outside, thinking of sow sweet williams etc, but do these flowers need to be in the ground on my allotment before winter sets in. Sorry but only ever grown annuals amongst my vegetables. Thank you in advance for any help you can give a newby.

Yep, stinking billies & wall flowers are Biennials so you sow this years leave them to over winter & then plant out from the nursery bed to the flowering position ready for flowers next spring.

Hello Miss Sunshine and welcome to the Vine. Yes, you can sow flower seeds now to get flowers next spring and summer. There will be no need to sow in a greenhouse at this time of the year. If you make a seed bed (any patch well dug and raked) you can sow straight into the ground, or in seed trays and pots if you prefer. You can sow annuals, to make sure they come early next year, or perennials to make sure they flower next year or biannuals to flower next year.
If you have specific plants in mind, or plants for a specific purpose, come back with your question and I'm sure we will all do our best to help.

Lucky you Two Sheds. The only time I tried them the pigeons ate them all. My father in law always had his garden in colour with them .They seemed to flower in any month of the year.
He reckoned they weren't late until December and not early before January. I never asked what he did about the pigeons.

I planted wallflowers in my front border about 5 years ago. I still get a few in flower each spring from seedlings. (But then I'm not a tidy gardener! - Himself described my style as 'jungle')
