Mortimer Sackler

Today I splashed out and bought a climbing rose, the first rose I've bought in years (the two I have are both from cuttings). It's called Mortimer Sackler, and is a thornless climber, with double flowers in a soft pink, which will compliment the Zephirine Drouhin I have, I hope.



Does anyone else have one?

I feel a bit hedonistic, 'cos I could have bought a lot of seeds with what it cost, but what the heck, it'll give me a lot of pleasure for a lot of years

That's a gorgeous looking rose but then all the DA roses are.

For Xmas my daughter bought me A Shropshire Lad to grow beside the front door - it's still in it's pot waiting for planting lol.

A Shropshire Lad was on my shortlist, along with The Generous Gardener, James Galway, and The Albrighton Rambler, criteria being - thornless, climber or rambler, repeat flowering, pink or pinkish flowers, and a good scent. When it came to it, the GC only had MS and The GG left, and MS looked the better plants. I could have ordered direct from DA, but if I'd had to do that, I'd have given in to guilt, and not spent the money

As it was I walked round and round the GC before making up my mind to blow the dosh

I do like the way David Austin roses flower and was thinking about a few on the allotment.....just had a look on their website and I think I'm going to need an extra allotment just to fill with all my favourites

I daren't look at any more, I already have 8, but my children buy them as presents because they know that they're onto a winner with any of them
(except bright yellow ones - one has to draw the line somewhere lol )

I've planted out Mortimer Sackler, and I have to say I'm a little disappointed.
I paid what I considered a premium for what I imagined was a container grown rose, but in fact it turned out to be a bare root rose in a pot of loose compost I could have bought just the bare root rose for £5 less.

One that was potted up for an Xmas gift, I suppose. It annoys me as well when they do that.

Was it in a DA pot or a garden centre one? If DA I'd certainly complain to them about it!

It was a DA pot, that's why I assumed it was pot grown. In future I shall remember to check for roots at the base of the pot, and also give the plant a tug, to see if I can lift the pot by the plant.

Aww how annoying! I'm sure your rose will be ok though once you get it planted and pamper it with a bit of TLC

'Cos I'm a lazy s*d and really can't be arrised to drive all that way just to complain and make someone's day miserable. I've planted it and it looks healthy, and I've learned a valuable lesson that only cost me a fiver. If only all life's lessons came so cheap...
