Gardening on the cheap with results

Good evening all,, due to cut backs at work I'm looking for getting good results in my garden without paying top end prices.

Being a novice gardener I'm bound to make mistakes being overwhelmed by pretty flowers, that won't do well in my garden. I have no idea of my soil type but can tell you I have a nice sunny garden south west facing. Bit of wind but not overly exposed.

I would rather buy my plants from reliable garden centres where staff know what there talking about. But simply can't afford there prices. So I'm thinking of reverting back to b&q / supermarkets and such....

Problem there being I always feel the staff are unable to advise correctly & after talking to some staff I always come away dissatisfied with the customer service.

So here I am again looking for advice from you kind folk. Ive got a garden fence in the front garden I'm looking to grow something against it. But don't know where to start.

It's south facing
About 10 metres in length by approx 3ft in hight
I'm wanting to grow something that flowers will spread and climb
Must be hardy & easy to grow (aberdeen area)

I've been thinking of a climbing rose but always thought there hard work to keep looking good I might be wrong? Do all roses do ok in north east Scotland or is there one I should look out for to buy or avoid?

I bought 3 of these, hardy down to -20c but may take a few years to become established.

Thanks big mallly, but at £15 a go it's still out of my price range, nice looking rose tho.

What about clematis, jasmine or honeysuckle? You can buy them quite cheaply in supermarkets or grow them from cuttings scrounged from friends!

Thanks vg, I have been looking at these I have seen then cheap in supermarkets, but how hardy are they? They look so small and fragile. Also not a lot of information on the plants what compost is good for these plants?

Oh that does seam a good deal. Looks like I missed out there.

If you are patient you can easily grow climbing roses from cuttings. I've done it, take some stems of the current years growth and push them in the ground in about October and by the spring they should have produced roots. Leave them where they are until the autumn had then dig them up and plant them where you want them. They should flower the following year.

Sorry but I have no idea about the weather in Aberdeen. Honeysuckle is as tough as old boots though!
If your fence is 3' high you don't really need a climber, more something that you can train horizontally or shrubs to grow against the fence.

Weather is a bit strange been getting snow showers over the last few days but last week was quite nice, summers are quite short and quite wet. So honeysuckle should be ok?

Yes again shrub I don't mind planting but don't planting but don't know what to buy would hebe be ok?

I got a nice mock orange last year from poundland and its absolutely thriving.
I know I'm a lot further south than you (I'm in London) but for a quid its got to be worth a go! They do all sorts of shrubs and roses.
