  • Roses..... Help

We have had to move 7 establised roses, they have been in a container with soilsfor a week and we replanted them at the weekend, all the buds and leaves have wilted, Is it worth cutting the wilted parts off now? and pruning back?

    Please help

Hi NSB, roses are notoriously difficult to move & you have to be careful to get a good rootball & keep them well watered. Yours might recover though as you've only just replanted them, I'd give them a little while & keep them watered & fed & mulched with some manure or something if possible. You might as well take off the withered buds if they don't look like they will ever open but I wouldn't cut them back too much just yet. Maybe someone on here is a rose expert & can advise you better but I'd wait & see what happens for now. Hope they recover for you.

I moved one about 3 years ago. It didn't die but it sulked - only had its first decent show of roses this year!

it's probably because you cut some of the roots when you lifted it. As Sue says make sure it's well watered ( shouldn't be a problem lol!!). I would give it a light pruning as well as the smaller rootball will be trying to suport the head & it won't be able to. If the weather changes they should picl up in no time. Ive got 3 to move at some time.

I love my roses and even my climbers are moved willy nilly , I cut the long silly roots then once I've replanted I cut down jump on from whatever height is easiest water then water again and off you go. Lots of chicken manure too.

I moved two rose bushes from Cheshire to Bucks Nov 05 and they're both doing fine in their new home - in fact one has been moved again this spring! It sulked for a week or two but is now flowering beautifully. I would cut off your flower buds to give the roots a better chance of establishing without the stress of trying to produce flowers as well, and maybe a light pruning, and I'm sure your roses will pick up. Good luck!
