I have just ordered a multi-stem silver birch for the garden and am wondering if it will need staking when planted? If so, what's the best way to do this given the multi-stemmed-ness of the thing? Google provided no conclusive answer so am turning to you wise grapes for advise!!

To stake...or not?

If it is multi stemmed then I would suggest two uprights and a cross piece. Or if not too many stems a support for each. It will need staking to prevent wind rock until it is established.Last edited by roitelet; 18-05-2016, 04:47 PM.Gardening requires a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration. I would suggest two sets of uprights and cross pieces with further cross pieces connecting them, to which you can secure the stems to, as roitelet says you need to prevent wind rock, and you can use old pairs of nylons or tights as securing strapsit may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.
