Poorly looking rose

Hi,

I have a rose that's in a tub and its starting to look a bit sick. So I was wondering what is wrong with it and how to make it better. There seems to be several dead damaged stems but don't know the best way to prune a rose.



It was potted up in compost suitable for roses and was regularly watered last year in the warm weather.

When did you last feed it? I think it just looks like it needs repotting. Do you know which rose it is? It looks like one of the patio types. As far as pruning goes cut out any dead stems. Then any that are crossing. I think that's all I'd do for now until next winter.
So I'd prune it, repot into a larger pot, having a check on the roots whilst I was there and keep up a feeding regime. It is possible to grow them in pots but I find they are much easier in the ground.

I'm no expert but it looks like there is deadwood which needs pruned and further pruning to get back to a better shape. But as far as I understand pruning should be done when growth is starting after winter. If it's a favourite rose of yours I would try taking cuttings and propagate a new bush but again cuttings for propogation are normally not taken til Autumn. Though I have had cuttings rooting from roses at other times of the year. A rose expert will come along soon.

Thanks for the advice. Its called Jack Duckworth, it was named so to celebrate 50 years of Coronation Street. I'm not a fan but I really liked it. This is what its meant to look like



Its a dwarf variety and is meant to be compact and suitable for pots and containers.

Will cow manure be suitable it or will it be to strong?

Is your cow manure fresh or well rotted. If well rotted use it with any plant. If fresh it it is too strong for tender plants but I would think a little would be fine for a rose.

It will be fairly well rotted. I'll get it from the allotment and get it from back of the mound so it should be ok.

Yep should be fine. It is a nice rose.

Last year it was more of a yellow colour with hardly any of the pink coral colour around the edge. Just need to have a fight with it to repot it. It might be small in size but its got some wicked thorns on it.

I would do my best to loosen it and pull it out with rootball fairly intact. Set it into its new tub which is partly filled with new soil/compost and fill the tub to near the top filling around the rootball. That way there is least disturbance for the rose. Why not get messy and mix your rotted manure with the compost/soil then use this mix to repot it.
Roses in tubs should be fed every four to six weeks and should be pruned each late winter when growth is resuming.
