  • Lupins.....

I planted lupin seeds ( thompson and morgan mixed bicolour ones) in pots about this time last year and planted out back in Feb after the snow, some have stayed small about 6 inch, some have grown to about a foot high.

the plants I planted have not flowered, but they have grown a few new offshoot mini plants right next to some of them forming a clump that have now flowered, and are bigger then the original plant in the centre....is this normal?
Seeds I planted this February (second lot of seeds just marked as lupin `russel` ) are now about 3 inch high and doing the same but no flowers yet, growing side plants that are outgrowing the centre one
Will the side plants be the same colour as the centre one would have been....have only seen twin colour blue and white ones on the edge plants but seeds supposed to have been mixed colours.

Is the centre one not growing as I damaged the tap root growing in tiny pot...( 1 inch sq module... )

Are they perennial? they seem to wilt a bit middle of the day with the heat here (40C) but they were outside at -25C over last winter in pots so seem ok with the cold.

I've got a lupin growing in the path of the new teritories (next to the gooseberry - what was it with this guy planting stuff in the paths ) which is into at least it's third year.

No flowers on it this year but I vaguely remember it flowering last year

Russell lupins are perennials. If they are happy they make bigger clumps each year. They do sulk for a while if the tap root breaks but they recover. Each of the side-plants will be identical clones of the parent.

I started some from seed in mid-May last year and gave them individual pots once they were big enough a month later. I planted them out this spring and they've been flowering for about a month.

Yours are probably complaining about being cramped in very small modules. Still, now that they are growing I would expect them to put up some flowers later this summer.

I've grown lupins from seed last two years in a row. I wonder if the offshoots are growing because of damage to the main taproot? Either way your plants should eventually prosper and flower next summer if not later this summer.
