  • Baby Trees

I've noticed there are some baby trees growing next to the hedge where the large trees are, I'm planning to dig them up and pot them in the autumn when they loose their leaves. is there anything else I can do to prevent them dying? I think they are silver birch.

    Thanks!

Not got much idea about saplings, but I imagine you need to take a decent size rootball to include a lot of the finer rooots, and keep the rootball frost free if they are staying potted up over winter.
If you are replanting straight away then loosen the soil around the hole and put in some extra nutrient( not sure what type would be best ) and keep well watered over winter and next summer.
I'd google fruit trees and follow planting instructions for them!
Hopefully someone else will have some more accurate advice...but that's my 'starter for ten'!

If they are silver birch, then even if you just wrenched them out of the ground, they would almost certainly survive!. They do not need any special treatment, if they are still small. Dig them up, pot them in garden soil, re-plant when and where you will.

I'm with Palustris. If the seedlings are small and you want to keep them, then dig them up and put them in pots. You don't have to wait till Autumn.

I tried this with suckers from my staghorn sumac - worked fine once I got the hang of taking some root with the sucker!
