  • How high's your Verbena??

Our Verbena (is it called Boniarensis?) is currently 7 and a half foot high and apparently still growing. This is way way higher than it ever grew before. Is this a record?

Beats mine CandJ! Mine's about 4ft tall I think so 7ft sounds pretty tall to me.

My garden in covered in Verbena Bonariensis...It self seeds everywhere and is great for flowers arranging. After reading your post I stood next to a few and the highest is only about 6 feet.

I think it depends if you cut them down in winter or not. If they are cut down, then they become much bushier and shorter.

      I love 'em

I have 20 odd plants grown from seed and did not realise that they got quite so big.

          Pretty.

They make fantastic landing pads for butterflys and bees. Its funny to watch the flowers 'nodding' as the bees fly away as their weight is removed from the flowers.

Beats mine too. Grew some last year for first time from seed I got free with a mag. All reached about six ft and no more.

mine usually makes around 5-6ft but it's growing in the gravel ! but you get this occasionally. I had 1 plant of Hidcote Lavender left so I bunged it in a bed where it was all sub soil from the pond excavations & that made about 5ft tall & 6ft across !!! the others only made the regulation 2 ft ish!

My verbena have just come through, my goodness I wonder if they are genuine? They are just like little hairs stood up from the soil. I have never seen such small seedlings..lol. When should they pricked out, they look so delicate? Any advice would be most welcome.

Hiya T_C, leave them growing until they have at least a pair of 'real' leaves (and are big enough to be handled safely). I can't remember how big verbena b seedlings are, but the ones that spring up between the paving slabs on our patio don't seem too 'fragile'!

I've got six of them growing in the cold frame, they look so innocent, don't look like potential six footers at all - respect....
Won't put them at the front of the border then....

i only tried to grow a few of these last year, but my cats dessimated a couple but I had one left, which grew to about 5ft! I was chuffed with this. However PW, you mention a winter trim - I cut mines down to about 2 inches above soil level! a mistake you think??

I have other seedlings growing on the windowsill so may get anothr few plants, if the cats don't get there first!
