  • Cosmos way too tall!

My cosmos went mad this year, grown to over 8 foot tall, it said on the packet 3 feet!

What did I do wrong? was the soil too rich maybe?

I don't think you did a lot wrong - you provided the best growing conditions and they responded. Almost all the cosmos we grow derive from three species - cosmos bipinnatus and two others. I suspect yours is derived from cosmos bipinnatus which grows 3 to five feet tall. Admittedly yours surpasses that but perhaps that's a credit to you and the conditions you provided. This tall species has yellow daisy centred flowers in the burgandy, red pink and white colour range. My guess your flowers fell into this category. They must have been a wonderful spectacle.

Early in the season I fed them with miracle grow sprayable, maybe that made them grow too big.

Too be honest they didnt look great, a bit of a mess

Did you feel they didn't look great because too much foliage and not enough flowers (an indication too rich soil and over feeding] or was it because of their height they need staked and we're hanging over and to the side etc?
With more normal sized cosmos the taller ones need staked though a handy trick is to plant them closer than recommended so that they support each other.
