Hyacinth Disaster

I put two bowls of hyacinths in the shed four weeks ago and when I went to bring them into the light today there is no growth and they look mouldy - can they be rescued or shall I compost them?

Bulb fiber often gets a white mould on it. Have a feel of the bulbs and if they are sound then stir up the surface and put them back in the dark. Four weeks isn't long for bulbs to start growing this time of year, they are probably making roots before sending up flower spikes.

Thanks Roitelet. The fibre looks ok it's the bulbs that look mouldy though they're not soft - I'll have a look at the roots

I suspect your hyacinth-apples just need warming up.

I check them at about 12 weeks,wait for the stem to get about 3inches or something before bringing into the light,there's a similar thread here about mouldy bulbs-

Have you checked to see if they are for indoor or outdoors Florence. Just a thought as the ones for indoors are heat treated and flower earlier than there outdoor cousins.

Thanks for the link JJ They are prepared bulbs and I too followed the Beechgrove method. I'll see If I can save them today
