Are pansies susceptible to frost.

I sowed some pansies a while back and when they were a reasonable size potted them on into a large pot. They seemed OK although I suspect something may have been nibbling them.

After the last sharp frost the have all gone limp.
Being a vegetable grower I don't understand flowers. I only planted them because her indoors told me to!

Is limp a good sign for flowers ?
Would then next step be the compost bin ?

I'll be interested in hearing the advice and replies to this as I planted some pansy seeds last November. Ive brought them indoors before our last frosts and have them on my kitchen windowsill. They are healthy looking but only about an inch and a half high and are growing so so slowly. Is that normal and it's because it's winter.
As for frost hardy with pansies I took no chances with my young plants. Yet I've seen pictures of blooming pansies in the snow. But to contradict this my brother in law had a lovely window box of pansies in full bloom. Yet the last frost a few days ago was quite severe and two of the plants went limp and died. Surprisingly it was two plants in the middle which I thought would have been the most protected. I am confused.

When exactly did you plant them out?
I buy winter pansies and plant them out in pots and they are pretty hardy.

I would leave them be and wait and see. Some of mine look a little limp after the frost but the perk up as soon as the weather turns a little warmer.

Tough as old boots!
Nip out any damaged flower buds and they will come back
We have had down to -18C and they just about survived....but they don't seem to like being waterlogged.

They are in a 14 inch pot and slightly under the eaves so should not be waterlogged.

They should be fine. Once the spring and summer comes and they burst into life again and develop seed pods, burst them and scatter the seed and you will get more next year.

Not only are they tough as old boots they self seed.

Are pansies not two distinct varieties i.e winter pansies and summer pansies? Winter pansies hardy, summer pansies not?

Just to add this spanner.. I've had mine planted since Sept and have flowered since. I've had night/morning frosts, they seem to flop but perk up after the sun hits them!

Edit and I had some last winter/spring and they re-seeded themselves by august but I threw the mother out around May as they started looking scruffy!

I have winter flowering and summer flowering pansies outside in the ground and in 4 inch pots on the window ledges
I cant see the ones on the ground in this sort of weather so dont know if they wilt as under 3 foot of snow but they survived the winters here for a few years,
The ones in pots sometimes wilt in very cold weather but always survive and we get -25C a lot and -35C some nights and they are fine, the leaves turn dark coloured at the edges in some varieties in very cold weather but stay alive not die like normal frost damage just a change of leaf colour
