I understand these dont like root disturbance but would they be ok in root trainers?

I never had any luck when sowing direct and I want to spread them out over a large distance dotted here and there so the gutter method isnt ideal

These beautiful plants have a tap root - break that and they don't survive. Personally I've produced them from seed quite easily. Try when the seed pods are mature spilling the seeds onto a couple of large pots full of compost. I expect they will sprout for you. Just take the pots away and forget about them.

Never have a problem with these growing from seeds - it's the other way round for me, I can't dead head all of them and there's usually one that's hidden behind /under something else that ripens then throws out 1000s new seeds for next year, and the year after, the year after that, etc as they can stay in the ground for ages before germinating.

Same as Jay, I always have them somewhere in my garden - I don't mind though, they are beautiful. They will seed quite freely but they get better if you can leave them where they seed.

If you don't already own the root trainers you could try growing them in loo rolls like I do for my broad beans

I was just going to suggest loo rolls, that way you can plant the whole tube wherever you want it and it won't cause root disturbance.

Jiffy 7s might be worth a try if you really want to transplant. I've also never had any trouble direct sowing them.
