Plants for up and over Arch

Hi folks,

Looking for some advice please..

So, I am thinking of putting a metal arch that will span across two vegetable beds with the feet either side within the beds.
I want to put some climbing plants (presume 2 is the way to go) either side to train up and over the arch.... I want something that (with care) will grow, meet in the middle and provide a nice bushy type cover over the arch. I also want it to have flowers and provide a nice splash of colour and a nice fragrance if possible.

So suggestions please.. Ones I instantly think of are Clematis, Climbing Rose...

I presume I can plant whatever I get either inside the legs or outside and train them up it appropriately so that it ends up outside and on top..

Sorry I can't help you Trip - but I'm looking forward to the replies.

I bought 3 cheapo ones from Wilk0s (£6 each).
I'm planning to tie 2 together for my outside cucumbers - but would like to use the third for a couple of climbing flowers (again to provide a bit of colour in the garden).

I am going the flowers route Mally, as I want to introduce a few more non veg plants but thanks for the suggestions

take up too much room I would think Snadge, don't want to lose much of my growing space

Apples and pears can be trained as single or double cordons to grow up - I've 12 fruit trees in a 10x4 bed training them as single cordons.

Roses, clematis, honeysuckle, jasmine can be trained up it, as well as thornless tayberries and blackberries (but you don't want fruit do you?)

Have plenty of fruit bushes dotted around already Jay, but will not totally eliminate the idea...
Tho I already spend plenty of time stopping the onward march of raspberry intruders

Strongly leaning towards flowers for something different...

I think flowerwise, most folk would go for Honeysuckle, Clematis, Jasmine, Climbing Rose.

I only got them last year so had no flowers last year, that's why I'm looking forward to this year. Here's one of them taken last week, it's just about reaching the arch.:

if you want something different there's the Cinnamon Vine - you get Arial tubers in the leaf nodes so you can grow root veg up an arch.

OK not a flower. Sweet Peas or those Perennial sweet pea things (OK, you loose out on the scent with those)
