  • Dahlia disaster

I planted out 2 of my dahlias about 2 weeks ago and they have been fine, however today they have taken a turn for the worst. This morning I went to the plot to uncover things in my greenhouse and maybe the Dahlias looked a bit droopy but fine. I've come back this evening to cover everything up again and 1 dahlia is totally blackened and shrivelled and the other looks like it's on its way to dead too! I looked at the blackened one and maybe there's some sort of mould on it, it looks kind of blighty? The other dahlia doesn't have that on it yet but the leaves are dropping and discoloured. I was totally not expecting this and wasn't sure what to do so I put a bucket over each one and went home. Anyone got any suggestions for what I should do?

      Deffo sounds like frost damage.

I don't know if we had a frost. The last 2 or so nights the wind has been freezing so it is possible they got frozen with the wind? I'll take some pics today so you can see what I mean.

Pictures would help but I think it's much too early to be planting them out now, the young green growth will get damaged with cold. Did you harden them off first?
I grow dahlias, the ones in the ground haven't emerged yet, the ones I've started off early are still in pots in the GH. I don't plant mine out until mid may usually.

In Kent, yes - I'm pretty sure you would have had a frost on Tue-Wed night.

It went down to -2 here in Cambridge inside my greenhouse.

These are the pics. I have never grown dahlias before so I started them off on pots then put them in my plastic shack/ greenhouse which doesn't have a door and they stayed there for 2 weeks so they are probably mostly hardened off?

That looks like frost/cold damage They should recover. Have you got a cloch or make a little make do cover for them?

Sorry scarlet I thought I had replied but I realised I must not have pressed post. Yes I have 2 buckets to out over them at night. Plastic is thicker than the fleece so so far no more damage has been done
