Where can I buy rose rootstock? I want to try to graft a rose before I move house.
I don't know. Is that easier? How do I do that? I am asking for advice so please take it for granted that I do not know the best way to take my rose with me.
There are plenty of youtube videos that show you how to take cuttings - Monty Don has done several.
Me - I just take a long new shoot, about pencil thickness and poke half of it in a pot of compost or where I want it to grow - and forget about it!
Take lots of cuttings and some are sure to take.
Its not difficult and I'm sure its easier than grafting.
Could try a few air layers too whilst you're at it. Youtube videos on that too - I watched a few last week. Takes around 8 weeks so if you're moving soon best get a wriggle on.
I know this thread started several years ago but may help other.
If you were to read “For the love of a rose” it is the story of the hybridisation of the worlds most loved rose “Peace”, you will find that Francis Meilland would roam the countryside digging up wild roses which became his rootstock for budding his roses. Budding is easy compared to cuttings and you will find many videos online to help you. It is simply the cutting of a letter T in the bark and the slipping in of a bud eye and taping in situ.
Unfortunately, you can't roam the English countryside digging up wild roses, they will be in hedgerows, and all hedgerows are the property of somebody. There is no un-owned land in the UK.
