  • What flowers remind you ...of

As I was just in the garden quietly deadheading enjoying being at one with Mother Nature I found myself recalling how i came to be aware of certain plants , these are just some of my fond reminder plants - some that have been gifted to me some who have been particularly loved and admired by my loved ones ,
Horned Cornuta, Cosmos, Dahlia, Bee orchid, Lupin" Pink Fairy" Nemesia, Nicandra, Salvia"Blue Angel"Chocolate Cosmos, Butterfly Scabious, Clematis "Bees Jubilee" Forget-me-nots, Sweet William, Antirinum "Black Prince" Carnation" Mrs. Simkins" to name but a few

Does anyone else have any plants that remind you ...of?

mint and pauls rose - my Dad. He was the one that got me into rooting cuttings in water when I was little
fuschia and geranium - my mother. Not a gardener but when I was little she used to buy fantastic hanging baskets from the local nursery. (Oddly enough my Mother doesn't remember)
sweet peas - my Nanny. Most years she would have seed pods popping on the windowsill.

Now I have lots of things from seed swaps, circles, pinching out of gardens, which I love as it is more personal than a garden centre. There are trees I have grafted - one for example is grafted from a tree in my village that is over 100 years old. I have bronze fennel from VCs seed but I got elsewhere, Nellie-M amaranth, Scarlets Jacobs ladder, if I wander round the garden there would be loads more. I have a white buddleia from 2 house moves ago (10+ years), I am trying to grow tree mallow that I remember from my home as a teenager and you used to struggle to get down the path. Dwarf munstard lavender which I have grown for years and produced lots of, which originally started from a bargain 10p packet of seeds 10years ago.

It is quite scary really that gardens really aren't just about a bunch of nice plants and most people would never be the wiser Time to stop waffling

When I was little, eldest of 4 children, my Grandma planted 4 beautiful blousy peonies one for each of us. I always smile when I see one now and was delighted when one popped up in my garden here in France.
Grandma is long gone now but I always think of her when I see a peony.

Tomatoes and Dahlias (and slugs!) always remind me of my Grandad - and pottering round the garden with him when I was tiny.

I feel close to him, and also to my OH's grandad (we bonded over veg growing ) whenever I am pottering round the garden.

When we first moved to this house we cut down a massive monkey puzzle tree - because it blocked all the light to the house, the roots were getting into the foundations and most of all because it was in the middle of the garden and taking up all the space. Just after it had gone a lady popped round to ask if there was any of it left - turns out her grandmother planted it there when she was a little girl - 60 years ago! Broke my heart
