Weed matting - friend or foe?

Hi,
On still on with leveling my mostly clay garden ready to lawn. There are weeds in there! BIG ones! (Roses, bind weed, nettles, random unkillable flowers, massive spiky horror plant). All have been pulled out, and dug up to best of my ability but not supriusingly they have started to reappear. Ill spray them with round up as I spot them peeking through the mud, but do you think a layer of weed suppressant matting under my turf would be good? / bad? indifferent? it would be a lot of work, but if it makes the nasties die Im up for it. Bearing in mind its clay so drainage is already an issue.

Get the grass seed down or the turf laid asap - then when appropriate start mowing. Once you get the mower on them most of the weeds will be controlled that way.

Just as nickdub says mowing will keep them down, just make sure that you remove what is showing before seeding or laying turf

PS I know it's been raining off and on for about the last 10 years ('ish) but don't forget to get some sort of hose set up for your new lawn - Sod's law dictates that as soon as you put down new turf or seed, then we'll start a long dry spell around here.

It would work for a while - but you say drainage is an issue. In that case, there's a fair chance you'll be needing to aerate the lawn at some point - which will result in lots of holes for any underground spreading weeds to come up through

Much easier to, as others have said, clear it, get the seeds or turf down and then control the weeds with mowing.

Would the knitted poly on the ground not help to retain moisture and make the wet ground worst and make it harder to aerate?
