The top looks like a lilac to me. But I'm no expert - I just like lilacs. I'm sure a more knowledgeable type will be along soon.

Yep, number one is lilac and number two delphinium.

I'd say Lilac too. The bottom one looks like a bluebell - but not quite!

Thanks, it's amazing what appears after you prune out and lay an overgrown hedge

agree with the others on the lilac - not sure about the second one, looks more like an aconite than a delphinium to me.

The first one lilac the plant that I first thought of for the second was Canterbury bell
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

The second could be monks hood, or I think the correct name is aconitum
                Just seen nicks post

                  Lilac for the first

Monks hood for the second one...it's poisonous!!
Read the toxicology part of this link and decide if you want to keep it. Are there children who have easy access to it?

Pity cos it's prett isn't it?

My reservation about it being Aconitum is that, apparently, it flowers in summer and early May seems a bit too early to be summer.

campanula pyramidalis was the only other thing that sprang to mind for the second pic.

Agree with you fully on that VC - it was the nearest I could get to the flower - I'm not sure which bit of the undergrowth is the foliage that goes with it either, which would have helped the id :-)

Bugger, unfortunately it seems to be monks hood, the leaves look v similar to ones I've found in pictures.
Not the time to find out you've got a poisonous plant in your garden smack next to the lawn, we're hosting our daughters christening tomorrow with bouncy castle etc and a good selection of toddlers. Looks like I can add dig out plant to my plan for the near future, shame because it is pretty but right on the boarder of the back lawn is the wrong place.
