Nope, it’s too windy over here for tall fings...everything gets cut down to hip height. The prolonged drought here has left the dahlias half that: they’re just flowering at knee height or less

Dahlia newbie here.

I bought Wilko tubers and they have flowered! Really pleased. If I grow from seed next year, will they have developed tubers by the end of summer or are these annual dahlias and different to tuberous dahlias?

Yes Kitty, they will develop tubers.
Are they out in the open ground or in containers.
Are you lifting the tubers atvthecrnd of the growing season or are you leaving them in the ground over winter.
If you are leaving them in the ground be sure to protect the crowns from frost.

They are in a container, so I might leave them as they are over the winter and repot in fresh compost in the spring. I'm hoping they will produce bigger flowers next year so might plant one tuber per pot (at the moment have three in a large one).

The cheap dahlia tubers, planted 3rd August have started flowering.
A mere 6 weeks from bunging in pots to flowers..

There's no chance mine will flower but most have grown well in pots....I hope some will make it through the winter. I'm hoping to try taking cuttings from them next year.

About a third of the dahlias I grew from seed this year are flowering now - I'm planning on lifting the tubers and storing them inside.

Brilliant VC, I ordered mine and put them in small pots...a good few are a reasonable size some have some small flower buds forming. A few were no shows but if I can manage to keep some I’m going to use them for trying to take tuber cuttings early.

Daft question..............should you cut off the dahlia flowers to keep the plant flowering - as you do with sweet peas?

I do VC...it definitely encourages more flowers and the bonus is they fill the house

I dislike cutting flowers - it seems cruel - I even struggle with sweetpeas, even though I know they benefit. I'll try to be strong tomorrow.
