      You might look into some of the ornamental grasses? And epimedium might be useful for the front, lovely form and colour over winter.

        I grow shrubs for winter and autumn interest with clematis covering them in the summer months.
        Chimonanthus or Winter sweet is a lovely fragrant winter flowering shrub that needs a sunny spot. Winter flowering honeysuckle and Viburnham Bodnantense are must haves. The bees will also be gratefully for the food on mild winter days. Every Christmas for the last few years I have seen bees bustling around my winter flowering honeysuckle that is by my north facing front door. It always raises my spirits as it reminds me that spring is not too far away.
