Coriander

Hey,

I grew coriander for the first time this year, but I was disappointed at how fast it went to seed... I was expecting it to last all year like parsley, but clearly it's something you have to make repeated sowings of? Is there a secret to keeping it going, or will it always bolt when it gets to a certain age/size?

It’s a cool weather crop I sow mine in late summer early autumn and with a bit of protection it will last all winter.

I found mine did better in the shade.

My stepdaughter used to grow vast amounts of it when she had an allotment for her Asian in-laws. She seemed to plant it continually and give a lot of her allotment over to it. I don't think it's something that keeps growing for a long time.

I sow it like lettuce, every few weeks. But some varieties run to seed quicker than others. Make sure you are using "coriander for leaf" ....as some varieties are grown for the seed.

I broadcast ours last autumn from self-saved seed and it germinated in early spring. Most is running to seed now but still harvesting the odd picking.

We're growing Calypso this year, it's a variety which is much slower to bolt. The March sowing only went to seed a few weeks ago. You can get it on eBay pretty cheaply. Cruiser is also apparently quite good.

Similarly to Scarlet, it get sown every 3 or 4 weeks in pots. I've also got some plants in the brassica bed where they will be given some shade by the kale and PSB.
