  • Where to put new herb bed.

    Hi,

Now have moving date, mid august and new house to move too. Lovely new garden which is very much lawn with small trees and flower beds round outside. As leaving my beloved herbs here, I want to plant a new one there. Noticed a sunny corner on my new-house-schedule. There's a possibly 5 foot tall thin type fur tree. So am assuming rather acidic soil. With lots of new compost on top, not disturbing deeper roots, do you think it possible to grow herbs around it's base. Sunny corner but pretty sheltered too. (Impossible to say for sure withot being there I suppose) but am dreaming of new planting schemes to add to what's already there.

    Thanks
    Beth

Many herbs tolerate poor soils so being under a fir tree might not bother them. I always feel, though, that your herb garden should be a pace from your kitchen door! In bad weather, if I had to do more than open the back door, step across a narrow patio and cut the herbs I wouldn't bother. Just me being idle though!

Ah Snadgar, you need to get a herb pot. If my herb bed was that far away i don't think the herbs would ever be used.

And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,

Create a potage style or mini kitchen garden by the back door, herbs and veg, a few veg plants near the back door means less time to run from the kitchen door when its raining. You could create mini hedges of rosemary, sage and oregano and plant veg in between.

            Hi,
Thanks for replies. I agree wholeheartedly about back door positions. My present herb patch is 2 metres away. At the new place, things are more complicated.

The corner i was looking at is v. close to front door as our garden plus greenhouse, garage, (pottering places) are out front and side. The back garden is shared, (we have the end part and by far biggest front garden, the others are cared for but not...adored)we're pretty sure of the boundaries from the seller but the solicitor will sort it out 'in the wash.' At the back there is a bed that the previous owners planted flowers in and she suggested I put veg in there too. We need to meet the neighbours. The sellers were there 47 years ago, so we will be of interest no doubt to the neighbours. I'm hoping that if we introduce ourselves and ask people first. The back garden is fine but could be improved, hopefully they'll either be very up for a spot of gardening or for us to, or they'll not mind either away. A Potager would look fabulous on the flower site and people could come and use the herbs too. Maybe flowers further from our back door could be enjoyed more by the neighbours. We will have to see, be very careful and patient. Meantime I look at the front garden in my photos every day, pondering!!!!
