    Depending on the herbs Hawthorn, Thyme don't like rich soil but Basils, leaf celery, coriander love it...
    What kind of potted herbs are they ?

        Chives don't need rich soil as growing medium (not a greedy feeder) but they will respond very well if you give them rich soil (big and bushy springs!). If you have multipurpose compost soil it will do or any garden top soil (mine keep coming back each year, they are in herbs raised bed). They don't like acidic and water logged soil.
