Can someone tell me the best time of year and the correct way to take and grow lavender cuttings. I have a large bush in a big pot, but in the last year or so it has become very straggely and there is only old wood and no leaves on most of the branches, only the tips. Should I get rid of this plant and try to get some cuttings and start again, or is there something I can do to save the original plant. All help gratefully received!!!

Lavender gets straggly, and the only answer really is to take cuttings and start again. I would wait until the cuttings are a year old, and doing well, before giving the old plant the heave-ho though.
You should trim lavender after flowering to help keep its shape, but not cut back into old wood - it won't usually regenerate from being cut hard back.K's Garden blog the story of the creation of our garden

Never take advice from me about cuttings...
This page looks quite useful though:
3.6 Growing herbs from cuttings. | Henriette's Herbal Homepage
After reading that, I think I might try lavender myself - give myself a confidence boost or, possibly, prove for good and all that cuttings are not for me...Last edited by Demeter; 24-07-2008, 09:12 PM.Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

I don't know the correct time of year either. Probably around about now I'll take some off the tips and let you know how they go. Although I may wait for a waxing moon, so towards the end of next week.Bright Blessings

Hi All,
I took rosemary and lavender cuttings last weekend, dipped in root gel then potted in compost.
The rosemary looks ok(at the moment) but the lavender looks dead/dying, what did I do wrong?
I put them on my patio in a mini greenhose but in full sun, was that the problem given the weather this week?
Regards

Full sun sounds like it would stress the plants - I mist my cuttings frequently during the day to reduce the rate that they transpire, and often seal them in plastic bags for the same reason, and usually put them on a windowsill where they are not in direct sunK's Garden blog the story of the creation of our garden

Have looked at my lavender bushes (in the ground - new this year) and they are flopping and although lovely flowers etc seem very straggly and untidy - any ideas. I am thinking of potting into a large pot to encourage it to stand up straight!!!!
