Horseradish

Where can I get horseradish plants/seeds from.
I know where there is some growing wild.Can I use this or is it illegal to dig it up?

I've seen small plants in garden centres occasionally. Caution over digging up the wild one, because I believe there is a species of dock which looks incredibly similar....

I thought it was illegal to dig up any root from the wild, I could be wrong though.
B&Q sell it around the same time as spring planting onion sets.

the guy on the plot next to us has something that looks like horseradish but i wandering now if its dock. how is it grown, if i get some from him and re plant does it continue to grow like rhubarb ?

Dock does look similar, but you'll know horseradish. The leaves are greener and if you dig it up it just grows right back again. It pushes cardboard and plastic aside with little more that a 'pfft' - and when you dig it up the roots are lovely and white but very thick.

I would rather have dock myself, much less volatile. However, I have both, and need to learn to live with the horseradish.

If you pull it up, a fair amount of the root comes too. Pop it in water and in a few weeks more little roots will form. Just plant that out somewhere that has room and doesn't need to look pretty and soon you will have it growing nicely.

It doesn't grow like rhubarb, the roots are underground. But, it does in that it will come back year after year.

The bed I have with horseradish is also the bed with most mare's tail; someone been horseing around in the past I reckon. Tis also the bed that will be dug over the most rather than dug over a little and mulched this winter as I want rid and I mean business.

Refering to the excellent "Food for free" by R.Mabey,the Wild life and Countryside act tells you that you can only dig up wild roots on your own land or if you have permission from the landowner

I love horseradish. I can't find it anywhere - domestic or wild! If anyone is chucking out any roots, I'd happily pay P&P and anything else if you'd chuck one my way!

We are about to dig up a load of horseradish [well, we do most months but as soon as the Quinoa is harvestable we are digging deep], so if anyone wants any; just pop your requests on here and I'l contact in order as we get any spare.

Hmmm, i never knew that, it being illegal to dig it up, i thought its growing wild (the horsradish that is) and so i dug some up!!!

Still, it was moderately hard to dig up and even harder to scrub it clean seemed to take ages. i was wondering baout planting some in a tub with some lightish soil to make it easier to harvest.

will it grow well in tubs?

hi i would love some too but i live in the canary islands and one i dont expect you to post it here but do you know how well it would do in the heat i have family coming on holiday and maybe they could bring some i might have left it too late though as they are here next saturday oh well your advice on growing it would be thanks tracy

Well, you'll have to decide yourself as I've no idea about growing on the canary islands. It might end up being too invasive in the heat, so if you check it out and still want some, then I can send some to you.
