having just been given an allotment, I have roped a couple of friends in to help out and share produce. My friend wants a herb bed but we were wondering what sort of size it would need to be. ?
Any sugestions would be most welcome.

Not too big, although it depends what you want to grow. I'd say 6 foot square would be ample. You really only need one or two plants of the perennials such as thyme, sage, chives, oregano/marjoram. A rosemary and bay can get quite big so they may need their own space. I sow parsley and coriander in rows in their own beds as you can never have enough of those.

Are you buying plants to start off with or seeds? I have some spare seeds if you are interested - from memory I think there's Rosemary, Thyme, Sage and Basil (bear in mind Basil is a mediterranean herb and won't survive the winter outside).

Hi

I grow my herbs in amongst the crops; and on the corners of my beds. And I pop some by the shed, and to cover any compost heaps that need to sit for a while. Mint and Lemon Balm, go next to the shed.

Coriander always goes with the carrots, and basil and oregano with the toms.

Chives and my newly discovered lovely garlic chives go on corners, it attracts the bees when in flower.

Borage needs more space, so goes in amongst larger crops, again to attract the bees.

Sage goes on it's own in the corner of a bed.

I too have recently aquired some garlic chives and didn't realise they had such pretty white flowers! They are in full bloom at the moment!

They had loads of Garlic Chives at Ryton the other week, absolutely dreamy this time of year, all in drifts.

i love the herb wheel might give that a go myself at the moment i have herbs everywhere i have a bed which i use that is really close to the house for daily use chives,thyme,pasley,sage,oh and a very dead lavender,mint is in a pot on patio the bay,fennel,oregano,rosemary and lemon grass are in a flower bed and my basil is wherever it wants to be as it self seeds here all over the place
my advice would be go with the flow and do what feels good
